There are cultural differences as well that can prevent the successful sharing of knowledge. Keep in mind that culture has many different degrees. For example it can be national, religious, organizational, and more. It is important to take a good look at those types of issues as well as the internal environment before agreeing to share knowledge with other businesses.

Yet it can work so don’t assume that it won’t. Think about how many different types of business out there are now operating on an international level. They even have corporate locations in different countries. Being able to successfully overcome such barriers has allowed this to work smoothly for them.

Many studies show that when employees are diversified based upon location. This type of diversification can actually help to stimulate different types of creative ideas coming to life. The uncertainty out there can definitely be reduced when the methods used for the communication to take place are on an even level.

In 2002 there were studies done about this in both Japan and Denmark. The subject matter of both had to do with collaborative workgroups for computer domains. The way in which they communicated within their groups were very different. In the Danish group they allowed all of the participants to help design the systems. The Japanese group didn’t work with the users at all. Therefore they weren’t able to validate the systems and how to apply them.

Even though both of these groups had the same types of information to work with, it was the way in which they distributed it that make it work or not work very well. The cultural norms of the Danish and the Japanese are very different too which is why they each took the approach that they did. As you can see from this example, there are some limitations that come into play culturally with knowledge sharing.

These types of barriers can be removed on a personal, business specific, and cultural level though just by taking notice of them. Evaluating what is best overall for the business can help bring new methods for sharing knowledge to the table. Identifying the limits that are holding you back is the first step to making it better. You don’t want to be your own worst enemy when it comes to gaining from knowledge management.

Many businesses calculate both management and knowledge together. They do so through the use of information technology. That is because it has a way of being able to detail the level of assets that are offered on an intellectual level.

Through such information technology is it s possible to make sure that knowledge within a business is properly managed. This is one debate though that not everyone is fully convinced of. In order for it to be true, then a business has to use knowledge management technology so that it can get the most return on its investment of time and money.

However, you do have to be careful with this particular concept. The fact that you will be using such technology to measure knowledge management lacks in one very important area. It fails to tell you if you are able to adequately access the full potential of the software and therefore if the knowledge offered is at the maximum level that it could be for that given business.

With that in mind you want to realize that knowledge management technology can offer a way to be more competitive in the business world. Yet there are other types of variables that you need to consider as well. Otherwise the data you rely on may be giving you inaccurate interpretations. Collectively though they can see the entire picture.

As a result they can develop solutions that are more concrete in nature. They will also continue to evaluate the business practices, implementing better ideas as the go. This is why no business is ever fully complete where it is. Knowledge allows for positive change to take place. Through the network of these groups it is accomplished though rather than done individually. This does apply to both formal and informal organizations.

With a formal structure in place there is a type of hierarchy that has already been implemented. There are leaders, supervisors, their employees, and many diverse groups. They all fit into one entity though overall. A great organizational chart will help the higher levels of management be able to bring the different segments together.

The logic of such networks relies on the fact that the more complex dynamics of it are brought together. Information has to be exchanged and shared among the different groups. The knowledge that is created can then be taken back to the leaders for all to benefit from. This is a widely accepted practice out there that can be repeated over and over again.

With this type of idea, the knowledge base is set up to rely upon the exchange of information which isn’t tangible. This type of network is going to allow for the knowledge to work within any organization. As they share it with other organizations it is also able to expand externally as well.
